Active Matter Dog Tags: What They Do
Active Matter dog tags explained: how you take one from a killed Agent with a Mindvault hack, what information the tag records, and what it is used for.
Dog tags in Active Matter are the trophy the extraction-shooter loop was built to produce: a record of who you killed, and how. They are not just a scoreboard entry, though — a dog tag is a physical item that occupies your inventory, can be dropped, and can be taken off your corpse by the next player. This page covers where they come from, the information they carry, and the one thing most players actually search for: whether they are worth anything beyond the collection.
Where dog tags come from
A dog tag is taken from a body, not bought or crafted. The community-maintained Active Matter Wiki describes them as customizable identification memory cards obtained from the corpse of a killed Agent, and it adds the detail that matters in practice: taking one requires a Mindvault hack. That is the step players miss, because a corpse without the hack is just a corpse.
Once collected, the tag behaves like any other loot. Per the same source, it becomes a regular item in the looter's inventory and can be dropped and looted in turn — so a tag you are carrying is itself something you can lose, and the tag of the player who killed you can end up in a third player's stash.

What a dog tag records
The tag is a kill record rather than a name plate. The community wiki says it carries three pieces of information:
| Field | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Owner | The name of the Agent the tag belonged to |
| Killer | The entity responsible for that Agent's death |
| Cause | How they died — any weapon or action that delivered the final blow |
The third field is the interesting one. Because the cause records the final blow rather than the fight as a whole, a tag tells you the loadout detail instead of just the outcome, which is why players treat a rare tag as a small keepsake of a specific engagement. The wiki also lists multiple tag types in its own table, so not every tag is identical.
Do dog tags have a use yet?
They will, according to the developers. In an official Q&A the studio was asked directly whether player dog tags would be used for anything beyond collecting, and answered: "Yes - dog tags will serve more than just a decorative purpose in your shelter." That is a statement of intent rather than a shipped mechanic, so treat any current "dog tag exchange" claim with suspicion — the official answer promises the use without describing it, and no corresponding system was documented at the time of writing. Our Shelter-facing systems page covers the progression track they would most plausibly plug into.
The cosmetic dog tag that is not a trophy
There is one dog tag you do not have to earn. The Deluxe Edition contents on the Steam store include an "Army dog tag 'Anomalous Zone Veteran'" as an edition item, which is a cosmetic granted at purchase rather than something taken off a corpse. That distinction is worth keeping straight if you are comparing editions: the price and editions breakdown covers what each tier actually contains, and the wipe page explains how edition items behave when you reset.

Where to go next
If your question is really about surviving long enough to keep a tag, the PvE page covers the zone types where you can avoid other players entirely, and the beginner guide covers the death rule and loadouts. If you are tracking what the tag family connects to next, the Monolith access levels are where the game's persistent-progression hooks currently sit.
FAQ
- What are dog tags in Active Matter?
- They are identification memory cards taken off a killed Agent. The community-maintained Active Matter Wiki describes them as customizable cards that are obtained from the corpse of a killed Agent and require a Mindvault hack to collect.
- How do you get a dog tag from another player?
- By hacking the corpse. Per the community wiki, the tag is obtained from the corpse of a killed Agent and it requires a Mindvault hack to take, after which it becomes a normal item in the looter's inventory that can be dropped and looted again.
- What information does a dog tag show?
- The community wiki says a dog tag carries the name of its owner, the entity responsible for its death, and the cause of death. The cause can be any weapon or action that delivered the final blow, so it records the kill method rather than just the killer.
- Do dog tags do anything, or are they just collectibles?
- The developers have said they will do more than look good. In an official Q&A the studio answered that dog tags will serve more than just a decorative purpose in your shelter, although no mechanic had shipped at the time of writing.
- Is there a dog tag you can get without PvP?
- Yes, as an edition cosmetic. The Deluxe Edition contents on the Steam store list an Armу dog tag named "Anomalous Zone Veteran", which is granted with the purchase rather than taken from another player.
