Active Matter Monolith: Access Levels & Reset
How the Active Matter Monolith works: the Alpha to Mu access levels, the Access Terminal, Prime as the currency, and what harmonising resets. Or not.
The Monolith is Active Matter's long-form progression track, and unlike a simple level bar it is built as a ladder of named stages. The community-maintained Active Matter Wiki describes it as a tiered system of unlockables and quests organised into access levels that run through the Greek alphabet, starting at Alpha and finishing at Mu. You work through them from the Monolith Access Terminal inside your Shelter, and the top of the ladder is the only place in the game where progress can be deliberately rolled back in exchange for permanent rewards. This page covers what the Monolith gates, how it is paid for, and what resetting it actually does.
What the Monolith actually is
Two things matter more than the ladder itself. The first is that the Monolith is not a separate mode — it is a progress track that sits over your normal raids, and its unlock tables are the reason a given Body Sleeve, Shelter upgrade or shop slot is or is not available to you yet. The second is the timeline framing: the community wiki describes the Monolith as operating on a system of timelines, where each timeline is the set of actions an Agent took before that timeline was harmonised.
That word, harmonised, is the one to hold on to, because it is the same vocabulary the developers use in patch notes. The official 0.4.0.182 update notes, for example, describe a suppressor unlock appearing "in the Monolith during the '250 Shades of Liberty' Cycle upon reaching 80% Harmonization" — so both cycles and a harmonisation percentage are live systems in the shipping build, not wiki speculation.

The access levels, Alpha to Mu
The community wiki documents twelve stages. Alpha is the entry point and is free for every Agent; Mu is the final stage.
| Stage | Access level | What the tier is documented as gating |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Alpha | Entry level, unlocked for free for all Agents |
| 2 | Beta | Shop unlocks |
| 3 | Gamma | Body Sleeves, Shelter upgrades, shop unlocks |
| 4 | Delta | Body Sleeves, shop unlocks |
| 5 | Epsilon | Shelter upgrades, shop unlocks |
| 6 | Zeta | Shop unlocks |
| 7 | Eta | Body Sleeves, shop unlocks |
| 8 | Theta | Shop unlocks |
| 9 | Iota | Shop unlocks |
| 10 | Kappa | Shelter upgrades, shop unlocks |
| 11 | Lambda | Body Sleeves, shop unlocks |
| 12 | Mu | Final stage; most rewards become permanent and the timeline can be harmonised |
Treat the unlock column as a map of what kind of thing each tier opens rather than a shopping list: the wiki's own tables list the categories each level gates, and the exact contents have been revised repeatedly since launch. What is stable is the shape — a dozen steps, with Body Sleeves and Shelter upgrades salted through the middle and the shop slots spread across nearly every tier.
Paying for access levels
Prime is the currency attached to Monolith tiers, and this part is official rather than community-sourced. The Steam store text states that Prime is earned from daily contracts, does not reset after a Harmonization, and can be spent on Credits, Monolith access levels, and special items such as additional secure containers and respawn beacons. Note the ordering — the same block of text also warns that Prime included with game editions is granted once, so the recurring supply comes from contracts rather than from the edition bonus.
That is also the practical answer to "how much does the Monolith cost": the ladder is priced in Prime, and Prime is time-gated by daily contracts, which is why the system reads as a long-term track rather than a shop.
What resetting the Monolith does — and does not do
Reaching Mu unlocks the reset, and it is opt-in. The community wiki describes it as an exchange: the Agent can restart their progress and set their access level back to Alpha in return for permanent rewards, and most of the awards on the Mu tier are permanent across every timeline. In other words you are trading the current run of unlocks for a smaller set of keepsakes that survive the reset.
That is deliberately different from the game's other reset, the self-wipe, which handles edition content, shop purchases and stash items on completely different rules. If your question is "what survives a reset" rather than "what is the Monolith", the wipe and Harmonization page covers the other half of that picture, including the one currency the official FAQ singles out as not being restored.

Where to go next
If you are working the Monolith ladder for a specific unlock, the two things it most often gates on this site are Body Sleeves and Shelter upgrades. If you are starting the game rather than progressing it, the beginner guide covers the first hours and the death rule, and the PvE page explains how to keep a Monolith run going without fighting other operatives.
FAQ
- What is the Monolith in Active Matter?
- The Monolith is the game's long-form progression system. The community-maintained Active Matter Wiki describes it as a tiered set of unlockables and quests split into stages called access levels, named with Greek letters and starting at Alpha.
- How many Monolith access levels are there?
- Twelve are documented, running Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda and finally Mu, per the community-maintained Active Matter Wiki. Alpha is free and unlocked for every Agent.
- Where do I open the Monolith in Active Matter?
- At the Monolith Access Terminal in your Shelter. The community wiki says the terminal shows the criteria for the next tier plus the rewards that are already purchased, still available, or not yet unlocked.
- What currency unlocks Monolith access levels?
- Prime. The official Steam store text lists the ways Prime can be spent as Credits, Monolith access levels, and special items such as additional secure containers and respawn beacons, and notes that Prime does not reset after a Harmonization.
- Does Monolith progress reset?
- Only when you choose to. The community wiki says that at the final Mu access level most rewards become permanent across timelines and the Agent can then harmonise and reset their access level back to Alpha in exchange for those permanent rewards.
