Active Matter PvE: Solo, Co-op & PvP-Only Zones
Active Matter PvE explained: dedicated PvE raids without other players, solo and co-op play, PvP-only zones, and whether the old PvE pass limit still applies.
Yes — Active Matter has PvE, and as of September 21, 2026 you can play it without ever fighting another player: the official FAQ confirms a dedicated PvE mode, and in the live build that mode appears as an isolated raid that removes other players while keeping the same zones, hostiles and anomalies. You can run it solo or with a squad of up to three, and the mode is the reason players who do not want constant PvP still have a way into the game. The one caveat is that not every zone behaves the same way, because some locations are PvPvE, some are PvP only and some are PvE only. This page covers how isolated raids work, what to bring and what the old PvE pass limit actually was.
Does Active Matter have a dedicated PvE mode?
It does, and it is a first-class mode rather than a training range. The official FAQ answers the question directly: if you do not want to fight other players, there is a dedicated PvE mode, and the game also ships separate PvP modes alongside its main extraction raids. Gaijin has said more modes are planned, so the current split is not the end state. In the launch build the PvE option is labelled an isolated raid and is picked from the mission terminal before you deploy. (single source)
Isolated raids vs open raids
The clearest way to understand Active Matter PvE is to split the mode into the two raid types a launch-week creator walkthrough lays out. In that breakdown, an isolated raid is completely PvE: the same zones and the same hostile NPCs and anomalies, but no other players at all, and you can jump straight into one. An open raid is the PvPvE version, where operatives from other timelines are in the same zone and are the main threat. The same walkthrough stresses that both options come from the same terminal, where you can also pick solo, squad or any mode. (single source)
| Isolated raid (PvE) | Open raid (PvPvE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Other players | None — the same zones and enemies, without players | Other players are present and are the main threat |
| Entry | Chosen directly from the mission terminal | Chosen from the same terminal as a PvPvE raid |
| Enemies | Hostile NPCs and anomalies remain, and are the whole challenge | Hostile NPCs, anomalies and other operatives |
| Best for | Learning maps, quests, blueprint hunting and exploration | Players who want the full extraction-shooter risk loop |
A separate creator review of the launch build rates the PvE side on its own terms, arguing the base game was clearly designed without players in mind and that PvP was built on top of it. (single source) That is the practical argument for isolated raids: the enemies were never meant to be filler while you wait for a player to show up.

Can you play Active Matter solo?
Solo is fully supported, and the official FAQ is unusually blunt about the trade-off: you can play solo, but solo is more hardcore than playing cooperatively. Squads cap at three players, a size Gaijin confirmed in the September 9, 2025 Early Version announcement, which makes a two- or three-player group the most forgiving way to run harder zones. In PvE the pressure comes from the enemies rather than from other people, so a solo player's main disadvantage is the lack of a second gun when a fight escalates. A respawn beacon, which one creator describes as a single chance to get your loot back at the cost of respawning with only a knife, is the closest thing to a safety net and is not a guarantee. Which zones are PvPvE, PvP only or PvE only?
Zone restrictions are official and slightly counter-intuitive: some areas in Active Matter are PvPvE, some are PvP only, and some are PvE only, so a PvE player is not automatically safe on every map. That means the mode you queue for and the zone you enter are two different filters, and a map with a PvP-only restriction will not offer a player-free version. The practical advice for a PvE-first player is to check the zone before committing to a contract that sends you into it, especially once a contract chain pushes you toward higher-tier areas. The official FAQ confirms two of the three opening areas by name — a Soviet laboratory complex on a restricted island and a quarantine zone in Central Africa — and the third is not legible in the available source text, so we do not name it.

Is PvE still limited in September 2026?
No current limit is documented, and the famous 24-hour figure is old. The claim that PvE can be played once every 24 hours, with one pass every 24 hours stacking up to a maximum of 15, comes from a February 2025 Steam community thread and belongs to the closed-test period, which makes it unconfirmed for today's build. (single source, to confirm) A Gaijin reply in that same thread in March 2025 said the team was running closed tests and that solo PvE was not available at that time, which shows how far the mode has moved since. (single source) Creator footage recorded on the launch build in September 2026 shows back-to-back isolated raids with no cooldown or pass count mentioned, so the practical answer for build 0.4.0.122 is that PvE does not appear to be rationed. What to bring into a PvE raid
A PvE loadout still needs the full preparation ritual, minus the fear of a player ambush. One launch-week walkthrough sets it out as: add your safe pocket, backpack and rig, then guns with any attachments you prefer, enough magazines for the weapon type, at least one medkit or streaming injector, and armour in all five slots. The same guide points to the special slot, which takes either a robot dog that acts as a portable container following you around the map or an assault quad bike, plus chrono jeans as passive buffs that apply for the duration of the raid. (single source) Two mechanics are worth knowing before your first run: heart rate rises with sprinting and degrades your weapon handling and speed, and air drops arrive during a match and can damage you as they land. FAQ
- Will Active Matter have a PvE mode?
- It already has one. The official FAQ states that if you do not want to fight other players there is a dedicated PvE mode, and creator footage from the launch build shows the PvE option as an isolated raid you can choose from the mission terminal. (single source)
- Can you play Active Matter single player?
- Yes. The official FAQ says you can play solo, though it warns that solo is more hardcore than playing cooperatively, and squads can hold up to three players.
- Is there still a 24-hour limit on PvE raids in September 2026?
- No current limit is documented. The claim that you get one PvE pass every 24 hours, stacking to a maximum of 15, comes from a February 2025 Steam community thread about the closed tests, and the official FAQ and Gaijin patch announcements issued around the September 15, 2026 release say nothing about a cooldown. Treat it as unconfirmed history for build 0.4.0.122. (single source, to confirm)
- What are isolated raids in Active Matter?
- Isolated raids are the PvE version of a raid: the same zones and the same hostile NPCs and anomalies, but no other players, so you can go straight in without a matchmaking fight. One launch-week creator walkthrough describes them as completely PvE and the mode it plays when it wants to explore. (single source)
- Is Active Matter a PvP game?
- Its core is a PvPvE extraction shooter, so player-versus-player combat is central, but the official FAQ confirms a dedicated PvE mode and separate PvP modes, and some zones are restricted to PvPvE, some to PvP only and some to PvE only.
