Active Matter Body Sleeves: Shells & Unlocks
Active Matter body sleeves explained: the Shells you can unlock, how Monolith access levels gate them, and the Guts and Ghost rework in 0.4.0.182.
Body Sleeves are the operatives you actually play as in Active Matter, and the game treats them as content rather than cosmetics. They have their own rarities, they sit behind the Monolith ladder, and the developers have been reworking individual ones in patches. This page collects what the official sources say about them — which ones are named, where they unlock, and what changed in the October 2026 update — and stays clear of the tier-list framing the sources do not support.
What a Body Sleeve is
A Body Sleeve is the body your Agent deploys in, and the official update notes treat each one as a distinct piece of content with a rarity. Update 0.4.0.182 names four of them in a single line: Guts, Ghost, Knight and Paladin. The Steam store uses a slightly different noun for the same layer — the Deluxe Edition contents list "Shell 'Reaper' (character)" and "Shell 'Knight' (character)" — so if you see Shell used in the store and Body Sleeve used in patch notes, they are pointing at the same thing.
What the sources do not give you is a complete roster with stats. That gap is worth naming plainly: the official site names Body Sleeves only when they are touched by a patch, and the community wiki's Body Sleeves article carries the name but no filled-in tables yet. Anything claiming a full stat table for every Body Sleeve today is not coming from either source.

How Body Sleeves are unlocked
Body Sleeves are one of the reward categories the Monolith gates. The community-maintained Active Matter Wiki lists Body Sleeves among the unlockables at several access levels on the Alpha-to-Mu ladder — Gamma, Delta, Eta and Lambda all carry it in their reward tables — alongside Shelter upgrades and shop unlocks. The practical consequence is that Body Sleeves are not a straight purchase: you progress the Monolith access levels and the sleeve unlocks arrive as tier rewards.
| Route | Documented as covering |
|---|---|
| Monolith access levels | Body Sleeves appear as a reward category at several tiers, including Gamma, Delta, Eta and Lambda |
| Self-sacrifice rewards | Starter Body Sleeves are among the rewards the developers discuss for a self-sacrifice |
| Editions | The store lists Shell "Reaper" and Shell "Knight" with the Deluxe Edition |
The 0.4.0.182 Body Sleeve rework
The clearest official statement about Body Sleeve balance so far is in update notes rather than a guide. Published on 09 October 2026, update 0.4.0.182 reworked two sleeves and moved them up a rarity tier:
Rare "Guts" and "Ghost" Body Sleeves have been reworked: they are now "epic" Body Sleeves with the same characteristics as the "Knight" and "Paladin" Body Sleeves.
Two things follow. First, rarity in this game is not cosmetic — the note treats moving a sleeve from rare to epic and matching it to Knight and Paladin as the meaningful part. Second, the named sleeves are not static, so a "best Body Sleeve" answer has a short shelf life. We do not publish a ranking here for that reason; the honest version is that the sleeves named as equivalent in the current notes are Guts, Ghost, Knight and Paladin, and the studio is still actively rebalancing the set.
What the developers have said about Body Sleeve rewards
In an official developer Q&A, the studio was asked why self-sacrificing rewards starter Body Sleeves and told it plans to expand the pool rather than keep the current set:
What is the point of self-sacrificing? Will the rewards improve, since the starter Body Sleeves aren't ideal rewards for everyone? We plan to expand the reward pool in upcoming updates.
That answer is worth reading alongside the wipe page, because it confirms that Body Sleeves come back after a reset rather than being lost with your stash. The official FAQ is explicit that edition content is fully restored after a self-sacrifice, with the single exception of crystallised Active Matter, or Prime.

Where to go next
If you are part-way up the ladder hunting a specific sleeve, start with the Monolith access levels since that is where the unlocks sit. If you are deciding whether to reset and take the rewards instead, the wipe and Harmonization page sets out what resets and what does not, and our beginner guide covers loadouts and the death rule for players still in their first hours.
FAQ
- What are Body Sleeves in Active Matter?
- They are the operative bodies your character runs around in, and the game treats them as unlockable content with their own rarities. Official update notes name individual Body Sleeves such as Guts, Ghost, Knight and Paladin and describe them as rare or epic.
- How do you unlock Body Sleeves in Active Matter?
- Several of them sit behind the Monolith. The community-maintained Active Matter Wiki lists Body Sleeves as a reward category at multiple Monolith access levels, including Gamma, Delta, Eta and Lambda, so the unlock route runs through the ladder rather than a separate shop.
- What changed with the Guts and Ghost Body Sleeves?
- Official update 0.4.0.182, published on 09 October 2026, reworked them: rare Guts and Ghost Body Sleeves became epic Body Sleeves with the same characteristics as the Knight and Paladin Body Sleeves.
- Are Body Sleeves the same as the Shells sold in the editions?
- The store calls the edition characters Shells. The Deluxe Edition listing on Steam names Shell "Reaper" and Shell "Knight", which matches the Body Sleeve names used in the update notes, so the two terms are describing the same layer of content.
- Do you lose Body Sleeves when you self-sacrifice?
- No. The official developer Q&A says edition-exclusive items are restored fully after a self-sacrifice, and it discusses starter Body Sleeves as rewards in that same answer, which places them on the restore side rather than the wipe side.
