Active Matter Demo & Beta: What Still Works
Active Matter demo: every test window from 2024 to 2026, why the demo has ended, and how the free demo rounds differed from the paid Early Version.
There is no Active Matter demo to download now: every documented demo window has closed, and the game has been sold as a full release since September 15, 2026. The demos were real, though — several free rounds ran on Steam from November 6, 2025 onwards, plus an Xbox Series demo from June 9 to June 30, 2026, and before any of those the game went through four closed tests. As of September 21, 2026 the current build is 0.4.0.122, so what you can still do is buy the game or watch it; you cannot queue up a trial build.
Is the demo still available?
No. The last documented Steam demo round ended in May 2026 and the Xbox Series demo window closed on June 30, 2026, both months before launch, and we have not found a live demo listing for the current 0.4.0.122 build (to confirm). That pattern is normal for extraction shooters, where a demo is used to pull players into a test window and then withdrawn when the retail version ships. Because the demo is gone, anything promising a downloadable Active Matter demo today is not pointing at an official build.
Every documented test and demo window
| Window | Dates | Platform | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| First playtest | December 3, 2024 | Closed test | Free, invited |
| Closed beta rounds | Through mid-2025, four rounds in total | Closed test | Free, invited |
| Steam demo rounds | From November 6, 2025; further rounds on February 23, April 30 and May 15, 2026 | Steam | Free, time-limited |
| Xbox demo | June 9 to June 30, 2026 | Xbox Series consoles | Free, time-limited |
| Early Version | From September 9, 2025 | Gaijin Store only | Paid |
The Steam and Xbox demos are the two windows most players remember, because they needed no invitation. Gaijin announced the Xbox demo with a clear end date of June 30, 2026, which is the clearest example of how these windows were framed: a fixed fortnight rather than an open-ended trial. The Steam rounds followed the same pattern, opening for a few days or weeks and then closing again.

Demo versus Early Version
The demo was free, time-limited and available to anyone on Steam or Xbox Series consoles, and it existed to give players a short taste of the extraction loop. The Early Version was paid, exclusive to the Gaijin Store, and began on September 9, 2025 — it was the game's actual pre-release build, sold with three editions named Advanced, Premium and Elite Squad. The Early Version also carried consequences that a demo did not: Gaijin confirmed it did not plan to wipe progress when the game left the Early Version, so those accounts kept their progress into the September 15, 2026 release. Whether demo progress carried over is not stated in the sources we captured (to confirm), so we have not assumed either way.

Was there a closed beta test?
Yes, and it came first. The closed testing programme opened with a playtest on December 3, 2024 and ran for four rounds, with the results of the fourth round published on June 20, 2025. Gaijin rewarded participation rather than just attendance: anyone who played more than two hours during the closed beta received the Standard Edition free, and those who put in more than 40 hours received the Advanced Edition instead. That makes the closed beta the earliest and the most generous of the four access routes the game has had.
What to do now that the demo is gone
The practical answer is to buy the edition that matches how much you want to commit, because the price page shows the Standard Edition at $29.99 with Advanced and Deluxe as upgrades and the content identical across tiers. If you want to see the game before paying, the free route left is watching official streams — Gaijin ran Twitch Drops from September 18 to September 25, 2026, with rewards for watching. For the release history around those dates, the release date page keeps the timeline in order, and the beginner guide covers what the first hours actually ask of you.

FAQ
- Is there an Active Matter demo?
- Not any more. Demos ran in limited windows — several rounds on Steam from November 6, 2025 and an Xbox Series window running from June 9 to June 30, 2026 — and every documented window closed before the full release on September 15, 2026. As of September 21, 2026 the game is sold as a full release, and we have not found a live demo listing for the current build (to confirm).
- When was the Active Matter demo?
- The documented windows ran from November 6, 2025 through 2026: Steam rounds beginning in November 2025, then further rounds on February 23, April 30 and May 15, 2026, plus an Xbox Series demo from June 9 to June 30, 2026.
- What was the difference between the demo and the Early Version?
- The demo was free and time-limited, while the Early Version was a paid build sold only through the Gaijin Store from September 9, 2025. The Early Version also fed directly into release, because Gaijin stated it did not plan to wipe progress when the game left it — see the wipe page.
- Was there a closed beta test?
- Yes. Closed testing began with a first playtest on December 3, 2024 and ran for four rounds, with the results of the fourth published on June 20, 2025. Testers who played more than two hours received the Standard Edition free, and those past 40 hours received the Advanced Edition.
- Can I still try Active Matter for free?
- Every documented free window has closed. The remaining free look is watching official streams — Gaijin ran Twitch Drops from September 18 to September 25, 2026 — while the game itself is buy-to-play from $29.99, as covered on the price page.
